Chapter 11

“How do I pay for that security detail?” Katina said as soon as they were out in the bright sunshine.

She turned her face to let the sun’s rays bounce off her skin. It was so hard to reconcile the bright sunshine of the outside world and those heavy scary topics going on inside that room. She knew they were one and the same, two sides of the exact same existence, but she’d much rather live in the sunshine.

“Anna doesn’t have much money, and neither do I.”

“You let us worry about that,” Merk said quietly. “Especially if this is the trial run for Flynn. Something we would do anyway. The job’s small enough that we can see how he handles it.”

She nodded. “So would you take it on as pro bono?”

Merk shrugged. “Sometimes it’s what we have to do. Some of our clients can pay, and some can’t. It’s a matter of balance.”

She turned to stare at him. She’d been instantly attracted to him, both times. She looped her arm through his and said, “Let’s walk for a bit. It’d be nice to forget all this is happening.”

“You’ve been living with the stress for days, weeks,” he said. “That makes it tough on anybody.”

“I have but hadn’t really realized the repercussions.” She stared off at the roses—a good dozen bushes, all in full bloom. They were beautiful. She reached out to stroke the soft petals. “I feel terrible about Eloise.”

“What was she like?”

She turned to look at him. “Nosy. She was one of those people who forever asked questions, like, where you lived. How come you’re not married? Did you ever get close to being married?”

She turned her gaze to the daisies and continued, “Initially it was really irritating. But then I realized she was just a gregarious person. She liked to know what everybody else was doing and thinking at any given time. Sometimes I rebuffed her. Sometimes I told her.” She shrugged. “I never did tell her about the marriage.” She walked over to a bed of beautiful blue flowers and said, “I don’t see columbines very much.”

She squatted beside the garden and pointed at the different types in front of her. “That’s this bed here.” She studied them for a long moment, struck by a thought. “They are one of the most delicate-looking flowers. Yet it’s amazing how well they survive in harsh conditions. They also reproduce rather easily, considering their fragility.”

She straightened and wandered a little bit more. He always stayed a couple steps behind her. Finally, when she got up the courage, she turned and asked, “Do you really think I’m in danger?”

He didn’t hold back; he couldn’t. “Yes. I do.”

She gazed down at her fingers clasped together. “Can I stay with you at the compound, or should I be making arrangements to go somewhere else? Not necessarily my uncle’s but someone a long way away?”

“The compound isn’t the best idea, but it’s better than leaving the country.” His face twisted into a wry smile.

At that, her face scrunched up.
